Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in cannabis and are an essential component of our bodies’ endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining internal balance. What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are a class of molecules that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The ECS helps the body maintain functional balance through its three core components: “messenger” molecules that our bodies synthesize, the receptors these molecules bind to, and the enzymes that eventually break them down.

The Effects of Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids interact with specific cannabinoid receptors present on the surface of cells which are found in different parts of the central nervous system. The effects of cannabinoids depends on the brain area involved, for instance effects on the mesolimbic pathway may affect the reward and pleasure responses and pain perception could also be altered.

Different cannabinoids also bring differing effects. CBD affects cell signaling in such a way that may suppress seizure activity without inducing any sort of intoxicating effects. THC readily interacts with a particular type of cannabinoid receptors in the brain, which causes us to feel high. These interactions may result in a variety of subjective and therapeutic effects including euphoria, appetite stimulation, and relief of symptoms like pain.

How Delta 8 THC Interacts with Your Endocannabinoid System

Delta 8 THC, not unlike Delta 9, binds to the body’s endocannabinoid system, which causes you to feel a slight high. Chemically, Delta 8 and Delta 9 are similar in that they both have a double bond in their structures and the double bond is thought to produce the intoxicating effects that make you feel high.

The two THCs are chemically different in the placement of the double bond. Both cannabinoids have a chain of carbon atoms, but Delta 8 has the double bond on the eighth carbon (hence the “Delta 8” name) whereas Delta 9 has it on the ninth.

Delta 8 binds to the endocannabinoid system in a slightly different fashion because of the location of its double bond. This is what is thought to make Delta 8 much less intense than traditional THC.
