What is CBG?

CBG (also known as Cannabigerol) is a cannabinoid compound obtained from Cannabis plants. It is one of the 120 cannabinoid compounds that have been identified. CBG has Cannabigerolic acid, or CBG-A, as its parent molecule. Other cannabinoids are also derived from CBG-A. The most common cannabinoids are CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

CBG passes through the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for maintaining optimal balance regardless of external influence. The CB1 and CB2 receptors are the cannabinoid receptors in the body. CBG binds to both receptors but does not have any psychotropic effects like THC, i.e., it doesn’t make you high.

CBG: How It’s Made

This cannabinoid is obtained from the young cannabis plants as they have been found to have higher CBG-content in comparison to the older plants. Both CBD and THC are synthesized from Cannabigerolic acid (the acidic form of CBG) by the plants as they mature. This fact explains the reason for high CBG-content in younger plants.

This makes it harder to get CBG from older plants, and many cannabis cultivators have experimented with cross-breeding and gene manipulation of cannabis plants for better CBG yield.

The Relationship Between CBD and CBG

  • They are non-intoxicating cannabinoids, i.e., they don’t give the ‘high’ effect.
  • They interact with similar receptor sites within the body.
  • They both show anti-inflammatory activity.

Potential Therapeutic Effects of CBG

There is limited research into CBG, but many studies show that it may offer numerous benefits. Some of these studies claim that CBG may help improve some health conditions. These include:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Bladder Dysfunctions.
  • Huntington’s Disease.
  • Bacterial Infections, i.e., antibacterial activity.
  • Cancer.
  • Appetite Loss.

Side Effects of CBG

There is very little information on this cannabinoid, and much more is being discovered. However, animal models have been shown to tolerate it well, but there isn’t too much information on the side effects it poses to humans.

Popular CBG Products

CBG commonly comes in the form of Oils, but they tend to be a bit pricey. Those who want to cut costs and still enjoy the effects of CBG often purchase full-spectrum cannabinoid oils. The very popular CBG products include:

  • CBG crystals/ Kief
  • isolate of CBG
  • CBG Oil

Is CBG Legal?

Since Cannabigerol does not possess psychotropic activity, and most of its products don’t contain THC, it broadly falls into the legal category in most places that have CBD products legalized.

CBG is presently legal to buy in the United States of America (asides from in Idaho, South Dakota, and Iowa) according to the 2018 Farm Bill. Also, CBG products, like all legal cannabinoids, must not have more than 0.3% THC.

Conclusion

CBG may not be as popular as other cannabinoids, but that does not make it inferior to them. More research is still ongoing regarding Cannabigerol, but results are looking promising so far. With the numerous benefits that CBG seems to offer, more scientists have opted to carry out further investigation into the benefits and effects of this cannabinoid.
