The Gelato 41 strain is a slightly indica-leaning phenotype of the original Gelato line, better known in the Bay Area as Bacio Gelato and shortened to G41 on most menus. Gelato 41 is one numbered phenotype from the original Gelato seed run, a cross of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies bred by Mario Guzman, also known as Mr. Sherbinski, in San Francisco. When that seed run popped, breeders numbered the standout plants. Number 41 became Bacio Gelato.

Both parents are West Coast heavyweights in their own right:

• Sunset Sherbet. An accidental cross of GSC and Pink Panties, and one of Guzman’s earliest successes. Known for a creamy, fruit-forward nose and a heavy body effect paired with a clear head.
• Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. The famous minty GSC phenotype. It brings the sweet, cool, dough-adjacent note that runs through the whole Gelato family.

So Gelato 41 is not a new cross. It is a specific plant selected out of an existing one, kept alive as a cutting and passed grower to grower ever since.

What does G41 mean?

G41 is shorthand for Gelato 41, and you will also see it written as Gelato #41, G #41, or Bacio. All four refer to the same phenotype. Dispensary menus, jar labels, and hemp brands use the abbreviations interchangeably, so a jar marked G41 and a jar marked Bacio should be the same genetics.

Is Gelato 41 indica or sativa?

Gelato 41 is an indica-dominant hybrid, usually listed somewhere between 55% and 60% indica. It is not a pure indica and it does not behave like one, but it leans further toward the body than most of its siblings.

The indica and sativa labels are rough shorthand rather than botany, and terpene content and dose predict how a strain feels better than the category does. Where does Gelato 41 come from?

Gelato 41 comes from the Bay Area, out of the Sherbinskis and Cookie Fam scene of the early 2010s. Guzman released a handful of stabilized Gelato phenotypes under the Sherbinskis brand, and 41 is one of them.

Per Weedmaps, the Sherbinskis rotation includes Gelato #41 (Bacio), Gelato #43 (Gello), Gelato #47 (Mochi), and Gelato #49 (Acai Berry). Gelato #33, the Larry Bird cut, is no longer in cultivation there.

One correction worth making, because it is repeated everywhere: Larry Bird is Gelato 33, not Gelato 42. Guzman told GreenState the nickname comes from Bird’s retired Celtics jersey number, which was 33. If a menu lists Larry Bird as a 42 pheno, that is a sourcing red flag.

Why is Gelato 41 so popular?

Gelato 41 is popular because it is the phenotype most likely to be in the jar when something is labeled Gelato. Guzman has said publicly that he believes much of the Gelato circulating in the United States is Bacio Gelato 41. Volume plus a genuinely strong terpene profile turned it into the default.

It also breeds well. Growers reach for the 41 cut when they want dense, resinous flower with a dessert and gas nose, which is why it shows up as a parent in a long list of modern crosses.

How potent is Gelato 41?

Published THC figures for Gelato 41 land in the low to high 20s, with reported ranges spanning roughly 20% to 29% depending on the cut and the lab. Herb describes it as typically low-to-high 20s. Mission Dispensaries lists 22% to 29%. AskGrowers reports a narrower 20% to 23% for its data set.

That spread is normal. Potency varies by grower, environment, and harvest timing, and a clone-only cut passed between farms for a decade will not test identically everywhere. Treat any single number you see for this strain as one batch, not a fixed property.

How do you read Gelato 41 potency on a THCa flower label?

Hemp-derived flower labels report THCA percentage rather than active THC, because raw flower has not been heated yet. To estimate what you actually get after you light it, use the standard conversion: total THC equals Delta-9 plus 0.877 times the THCA percentage.

Anything above 25% THCA is strong flower regardless of the strain name on the jar. Start with one or two pulls and wait, especially if you are returning after a break. You can always smoke more.

What does Gelato 41 taste and smell like?

Gelato 41 leads with sweet cream and vanilla, then turns gassy and slightly savory on the exhale. Fig Farms, which grows the cut commercially, describes its tasting notes as sweet creamy vanilla, guava, and gassy burnt rubber. Guzman himself points to lavender, vanilla, and pine as the signature.

Those notes come from the terpene profile:

Visually, Gelato 41 runs dense and tightly packed, with calyxes that look ready to split. Color ranges from bright lime green to deep purple, cut through with vivid orange pistils. Heavy trichome coverage is typical of a well-grown example.

What are the effects of Gelato 41?

Gelato 41 effects usually start in the head and settle into the body. Reported experiences follow a consistent arc: a quick lift and mood elevation in the first few minutes, then a steady, weighted physical relaxation that builds over the next half hour.

Commonly reported effects include:

• Euphoria and mood elevation early in the session
• Full-body relaxation that deepens over time
• A talkative, social window before the body effect takes over
• Noticeable appetite stimulation
• Heaviness or couch-lock at higher doses

Common side effects are the usual THC ones: dry mouth, dry eyes, and, at higher doses, dizziness or anxiety. Flower testing in the high 20s can trigger anxiety in people who do not normally get it, so dose conservatively with an unfamiliar batch.

Does Gelato 41 make you sleepy?

Gelato 41 vs Gelato 33: what is the difference?

The difference is weight. Gelato 33 is the brighter, more balanced cut, and Gelato 41 is the heavier, gassier, more sedating one. They share identical parentage, so the split comes down to which plant expressed what.

A note on Gelato 45: it gets described as the heaviest and most sedating of the numbered phenos, with deeper purple coloring. Guzman does not recognize it as one of his, so treat G45 labeling with the same skepticism you would apply to any unofficial number.

What strains are similar to Gelato 41?

If Gelato 41 is out of stock, its siblings and children hit the closest. The siblings share the exact same parentage and differ only by phenotype expression:

• Gelato 43 (Gello Gelato). Sherbinskis pheno, sweeter and less gassy.
• Gelato 47 (Mochi Gelato). Sherbinskis pheno, creamier and more even.
• Gelato 49 (Acai Berry Gelato). Sherbinskis pheno, berry-forward.
• GSC and Thin Mint. The grandparents, and still the cleanest way to taste where the mint note originates.

The crosses built on the 41 cut are where you find it most often now. Biscotti, Kush Mints x Gelato 41, Gelato 41 x Animal Mints, Grape Pie x Gelato 41, and Zkittlez x Gelato 41 all carry its dessert and gas signature. Lemon Cherry Gelato sits in the same family with a brighter citrus and cherry direction instead of the vanilla.

Can you grow Gelato 41 at home?

Not the authentic cut, no. Gelato 41 is a heritage Sherbinskis clone that was never released in seed or clone form, according to SeedFinder. Anything sold as Gelato 41 seeds, including backcross and autoflower versions, is another breeder’s recreation working from related genetics.

Those recreations can be genuinely good, and several are well regarded. They are just not the same plant, which is worth knowing before you spend a season on one.

Reported grow characteristics for Gelato 41 and its seed-market versions:

• Flowering time. Roughly 8 to 10 weeks depending on the source and the cut.
• Structure. Short and bushy from the indica lean, which needs regular pruning for airflow.
• Yield. Moderate to high with training methods like low-stress training or screen of green.
• Difficulty. Moderate. It is sensitive to temperature and humidity swings and rewards consistency over a hands-off approach.

Home cultivation of cannabis is legal in some states and a felony in others, and hemp cultivation carries its own licensing requirements. Check your state and local law before you plant anything.
