Green Wednesday is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the cannabis industry’s second-biggest shopping day of the year behind 4/20. In 2026, it lands on Wednesday, November 25. Retailers run some of their deepest deals of the season, and shoppers stock up before the long holiday weekend.
The name follows the retail-holiday convention: green for cannabis, pinned to the day before Thanksgiving the same way Black Friday is pinned to the day after. People call it the Black Friday of cannabis for a reason.
Green Wednesday is a single-day cannabis retail event held annually on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The date moves every year because Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, so in 2026 Green Wednesday falls on November 25.
Don’t confuse it with Green Monday, an e-commerce shipping deadline in mid-December, or with “Weed Wednesday,” the generic weekly promo some dispensaries run year-round. Green Wednesday is its own event with its own sales data behind it.
Participation has also widened. It started with licensed dispensaries and delivery services, but hemp-derived THC retailers that ship nationally now run the holiday too. That matters if you don’t live near a dispensary.
Because it’s the last chance to buy before a four-day holiday stretch, on the heaviest travel evening of the year. Three buyer motivations converge on the same day.
First, stocking up. Many dispensaries close or cut hours on Thanksgiving, and travelers want their supply sorted before they leave town. The long weekend creates a hard deadline that no other Wednesday has.
Second, reconnecting. Thanksgiving brings friends and family back to town, and a lot of Green Wednesday buying is social. People shop for shared sessions, the Thanksgiving walk with the cousins, and gatherings where they’re the one bringing something.
Third, holiday stress. Family gatherings, travel delays, and hosting duties send plenty of shoppers looking for something to help them unwind over the weekend.
There’s a fourth force growing underneath: the alcohol swap. A 2026 survey of THC beverage consumers by Crescent Canna found 76.6% had reduced their alcohol intake since trying THC drinks, and 21.1% had quit drinking entirely. NCSolutions polling found 49% of Americans planned to drink less in 2025, with 26% interested in trying cannabis-infused drinks.
That sober-curious shift shows up hardest at holidays, when THC sodas and low-dose gummies stand in for the bottle of wine. The sales data backs it up: Headset reports Green Wednesday sales ran 33% above a typical Wednesday in 2021 and grew 52% in 2023, with edibles up 10.5% and beverages up 3% while concentrates declined.
The term is widely credited to Eaze, a California cannabis delivery platform, which says it coined the name in 2016 after spotting a pre-Thanksgiving surge in its order data that trailed only 4/20.
That origin matters. Nobody invented Green Wednesday as a marketing campaign. The surge already existed in the transaction data, and the industry named a pattern it was watching happen. Once the name stuck, retailers leaned in with dedicated promotions, and the day grew into a fixture of the cannabis calendar.
Around the same time, “Danksgiving” emerged as the consumer-side name for the same weekend. The two overlap but aren’t identical: Green Wednesday is the shopping day, while Danksgiving usually refers to the infused meal or session itself.
By dollars, it sits solidly in second place. Headset’s industry data puts 4/20 at roughly $134.4 million in dispensary sales, Green Wednesday at about $113.5 million, and Black Friday close behind at around $107.5 million. Notably, almost every cannabis sales peak except 4/20 is the eve of a holiday rather than the holiday itself.
The three days differ more in character than in size:
The basket differs because the occasion does. Green Wednesday shoppers buy for shared gatherings and travel, which pushes demand toward discreet, portable, and shareable formats over glass-and-grinder sessions at home.
Should you buy Wednesday or wait for Black Friday? The real tradeoff is inventory depth versus discount depth. Wednesday has the fullest shelves and the event pricing is already live. By Friday, discounts may run slightly deeper, but doorbuster items and popular flavors sell through first.
The category data tells a consistent story: discreet and shareable formats win this day. In one Headset analysis of Green Wednesday, beverages jumped 93% over typical Wednesdays, edibles rose 82%, and vape pens climbed 42%. Those are 2019 figures, but the direction has held every year since: portable formats up, concentrates down.
Here’s how that breaks out by use case.
Edibles, gummies, and vapes outsell flower on this specific day because Thanksgiving means shared spaces. Relatives in the guest room, hotels with smoke policies, and long car rides all favor formats nobody can smell.
Timing matters more at the holidays than any other week. Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in and can last 6 hours or more, while vapes hit within minutes and fade in 1 to 3 hours. Our full breakdown of how long edibles last covers onset, peak, and comedown so you can plan around dinner instead of through it.
Our gummies and disposable vapes both fit this lane. Every batch is third-party lab tested with per-serving milligram labeling, which helps when you need to know exactly what you took and when.

Pre-rolls, infused beverages, and multipacks are the cannabis equivalent of bringing a bottle of wine. They pass easily, portion cleanly, and don’t require anyone’s gear. Our Essential THCa Preroll Bundle covers the cousin-walk crowd, and a 4-pack like the Blue Razz sugar-free THC soda works as the thing you hand the host.
One caution on that soda: each can carries 50mg of THC, which is a heavy dose. Treat it as a shareable format, split over ice, rather than a one-person drink. It is not a beginner serving.
Mixed tolerance is the defining challenge of holiday sessions. When the group ranges between daily consumers and someone who hasn’t touched cannabis since college, low doses and clear labeling protect everyone. Start low, go slow, and never pressure the occasional user to keep pace.
This is where the per-unit math gets best: bulk flower, larger-format carts, and multipacks. A sealed jar like the Delta-9 50-count gummy jar holds up well in volume. If flower is your stock-up buy, our guide to storing THCa flower covers keeping it fresh into the new year.
Most retailers pull from the same playbook, and each structure signals something different:
Timing has stretched. Many retailers, ours included, now open their window the weekend before and run through Cyber Monday, making Green Wednesday effectively a five-day event with the Wednesday as its peak.
Read the fine print before you build a cart. Regulated dispensary markets often carry purchase limits and per-transaction caps, and online stores may set minimum order thresholds for free shipping or gate deals behind email signup. Everything requires being 21 or older with valid ID.
The real bottleneck isn’t price. It’s shipping. An online order placed on Green Wednesday will not arrive before Thanksgiving. Our orders ship from Madison, Wisconsin, usually same-day, but standard transit runs 3 to 10 days and there’s no overnight option. If you want product in hand for the holiday, order in mid-November. Hemp retailers know this, which is why our sale windows tend to open earlier than dispensary doorbusters.
You have three access paths, and which ones apply depends on where you live.
Dispensaries serve state-legal recreational or medical markets, in person or curbside. If you live in one of those states, this is the classic Green Wednesday experience, lines included.
Delivery services operate in select metro markets. Order cutoff times tighten sharply around the holiday, so a Wednesday-evening order may not make it.
Hemp retailers are the path most Green Wednesday coverage skips, and it’s where we sit. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp products containing less than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight are federally legal, which lets retailers like us ship to most US states. The compounds are the same ones found in dispensary products. The regulatory pathway, and therefore the availability map, is what differs.
That distinction is the whole game if you live hours from the nearest dispensary. No lines, no drive, no closure problem, and every product we sell is third-party lab tested with COAs publicly posted. State hemp laws vary and are actively changing, though, so check your local rules. We can’t ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Washington state, or states where Delta-8 is illegal.
Most dispensaries are open Wednesday, often with extended hours, and many close or reduce hours on Thanksgiving itself. That closure is a big part of why Wednesday spikes. Check your local shop’s holiday hours in advance, and expect Wednesday evening lines to be the longest of the year.
Start with your actual monthly consumption, then buy against that number instead of the discount. A 40% deal on product you won’t finish by spring is not a deal.
Shelf life should shape the cart. Sealed edibles and gummies hold for months. Carts and disposables are stable but can thicken or lose flavor over long storage. Flower degrades fastest and rewards buying only what you’ll use within a couple of months, stored airtight and away from light.
If you’re dosing for a group or coming back after a break, start low and go slow. Begin with 2.5 to 5mg of THC for occasional users, and wait a full two hours before taking more of any edible. The most common holiday mistake is redosing at minute 45 because “it isn’t working.”
One more rule for the stock-up haul: store everything childproofed and out of reach. High-potency gummies look like candy, and Thanksgiving houses are full of kids and pets. Keep original child-resistant packaging and shelve it high.
Green Wednesday sits inside a wider cannabis calendar, and each date shops differently:
Green Wednesday is real, measurable, and here to stay. The playbook is simple. Know your monthly consumption, favor formats that travel and share well, and mind the shipping math.
If your Green Wednesday happens online, the smart version starts in mid-November so the box beats the turkey. Our best sellers are a good place to see what other Cloudheads restock when the holidays roll around.
